After Care

Healing with Second Skin

I might have called this wrap second skin, Tegaderm, Saniderm, or Dynarex. No matter the name, this is the sticker-like wrap that is completely transparent. .

       I suggest leaving this wrap on for at least 24 hours, and at most 72 hours. While you wear this wrap, you do not have to clean or moisturize your tattoo. You may still take showers as normal, but NEVER submerge your fresh tattoo in any water with or without your wrap. 

When you go to take off your wrap, do it in the shower after you’ve let warm water loosen the bandage. Peel the second skin off gently.

Once you have taken off your bandage, wash your tattoo with warm water and fragrance-free soap, carefully washing away all residue. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and moisturize lightly with unscented lotion. Continue to clean and moisturize your tattoo 3 times a day for the next 2-3 weeks while your tattoo heals.

Healing without Second Skin

If I didn’t use second skin on your tattoo, then we put a temporary wrap on your tattoo. I will have instructed you on when to remove it (probably before bed or in the morning depending on our appointment time).

When you take off your bandage, wash your tattoo with warm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and moisturize lightly with unscented lotion. Continue to clean and moisturize your tattoo 3 times a day for the next 2-3 weeks while your tattoo heals.

Healing Tips

  • Do not submerge your tattoo in any body of water until its been at least 3 weeks since you got it.

  • The sun is a tattoos worst enemy. Avoid the sun while your tattoo heals. Once it’s healed, start using sunscreen to protect it.

  • Keep moisturizing your tattoo even after it’s healed. It will keep it lookin fresh.

  • Make sure your clothes and sheets are clean before they touch your fresh tattoo.

  • Use a plain, unscented, white lotion to moisturize. Don’t use any clear, petroleum based products like Vaseline or Aquaphor.
